(WASHINGTON, DC) - Saudi Arabia today passed a law against domestic violence against women, children and domestic workers The law was passed during a meeting by the Council of Ministers, chaired by Second Deputy Prime Minister Prince Muqrin bin Abdulaziz.

The new law criminalized domestic violence and other forms of physical or sexual abuse, both at home and in the workplace. The new law also provides shelter and treatment for victims of abuse.

The law specifies that those found guilty of committing psychological or physical abuse could face prison sentences of up to one year and up to SR50,000 ($13,300) in fines.

The cabinet called on all employees who have knowledge of cases of abuse to report them to their employers, who are obligated to report such cases to the Ministry of Social Affairs or police.
