(WASHINGTON, DC) -– Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal called on the Syrian regime to stop the violence against civilians or face Chapter VII of the U.N. Charter. Prince Saud’s comments were made while addressing the 22nd session of the Joint Ministerial Meeting between member countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the European Union (EU) in Luxembourg yesterday.
"If the Syrian regime continues its policy of violence and repression, then, it becomes inevitable but to resort to Chapter VII of the U.N. Charter in collective international efforts," said Prince Saud. "The flow of arms to the Syrian regime must stop," he stressed.
Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter outlines measures the Security Council might take in response to threats to the peace, breaches of the peace and acts of aggression.
The Joint Ministerial Meeting was co-chaired by Prince Saud, as chairman of the current session of the GCC ministerial council, and High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton.
