December 29, 2009
Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu received U.S. Ambassador to the Kingdom James B. Smith and U.S. Consul General in Jeddah Martin R. Quinn at OIC headquarters yesterday. Ihsanoglu briefed the American officials on the OIC’s latest activities, and then various political issues were discussed, most notably the situations in Afghanistan and Somalia.
The two sides stressed the importance of strengthening OIC-U.S. cooperation, especially in the wake of U.S. President Barack Obama’s landmark speech to the Muslim world in Cairo earlier this year. In addition, joint projects to fight polio and to improve maternal and infant health services in the least-developed OIC member states were given “special focus” during the meeting, according to an OIC press release.
Later, Ambassador Smith and Consul General Quinn met with Jeddah Governor Prince Mishaal bin Majed bin Abdulaziz.
