Minister of State for Foreign Affairs attends emergency Arab League meeting

November 17, 2012

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Dr. Nizar bin Obaid Madani led the Saudi delegation to an emergency meeting of Arab League (AL) Foreign Ministers in Cairo today to discuss the Israeli aggression against the Gaza Strip. The meeting was chaired by Lebanese Foreign Minister Adnan Mansour and included the participation of AL Secretary General Dr. Nabil El-Arabi and many other senior Arab officials.

Addressing the AL Council, Dr. Madani condemned the Israeli attacks and called for a stronger, more unified Arab stance against the mistreatment of Palestinians. “It is no longer reasonable or acceptable to pass this new aggression unpunished,” he said. In the past, weak responses “which did not exceed words and sought, in vain, binding decisions of the Security Council made Israel careless of observing the Arab and international community’s demands,” he asserted. “The Kingdom sees that it is time for the Palestinians to enjoy, like other peoples of the world, peace and security and to have a homeland free of violence, killing and destruction.”

Dr. Madani asked the U.N. Security Council to be tougher and to assume its responsibilities to compel Israel to immediately stop its assault on the innocent people trapped in Gaza. Furthermore, he placed full responsibility for the current deteriorating situation on the Israeli government.
