King Abdullah chairs Cabinet session

The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz chaired the Cabinet session at Al-Yamamah Palace in Riyadh today. At the outset, the King briefed the Cabinet on his recent contacts with foreign leaders, including talks with Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad, correspondence with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and a telephone call with Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad.

The Cabinet listened to a number of reports on regional and international issues, including developments in Palestine, Iraq and Sudan. The ministers reiterated the Kingdom’s stances on each issue, noting that Saudi Arabia is committed to promoting all efforts that support security and stability in the world.

Next, the Cabinet reviewed the international conferences in which Saudi Arabia recently participated, including the Friends of Pakistan Conference, the 8th Joint Ministerial Meeting of the GCC-Turkey High Level Strategic Dialogue, the OPEC Ministerial Conference, and the Standing Committee for Information and Cultural Affairs “COMIAC.” Regarding Pakistan, the ministers renewed the Kingdom’s call for the international community to continue supporting the victims of the devastating flooding.

The Cabinet lauded the charitable humanitarian initiatives of King Abdullah, specifically praising the new “Abdullah bin Abdulaziz International Program for the Culture of Dialogue and Peace.” A memorandum of understanding was signed last week by Education Minister Prince Faisal bin Abdullah bin Mohammed Al-Saud and the Director General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) establishing the program.

Finally, the Cabinet discussed the workshop organized by the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources and the Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency (SAMA) under the banner “Energy Security.” The event was attended by representatives of G-20 member states and international organizations and institutions. The ministers repeated the Kingdom’s commitment to supporting all efforts and means that ensure energy security.

Turing to its weekly agenda items, the Cabinet approved a protocol amending a memorandum of understanding between the Kingdom and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR); authorized the General President of Youth Welfare to sign a draft agreement on cooperation in the field of youth and sports with Lebanon; approved a framework agreement for cooperation in the fields of agriculture, animal resources and fisheries with Vietnam; authorized the Minister of Water and Electricity to sign a draft memorandum of understanding in the field of water resources with the South Korean Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs; and approved the final accounts of the General Organization of the King Fahd Causeway for fiscal year 1428/1429H.

The Cabinet also approved the appointments of Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Suwailem as Vice President of the King Abdulaziz City for Sciences and Technology (KACST) for Scientific Research Support on an acting basis for four years (15th rank) and Sulaiman Al-Sayiari as Director General of the Minister’s Office at the Ministry of Agriculture (14th rank).
