King Abdullah chairs Cabinet session
September 27, 2010
The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz began the Cabinet session in Jeddah today by noting the significance of Saudi National Day, reflecting on the rapid development enjoyed by the Kingdom over the past eighty-one years. He then gave a briefing on his most recent contacts with other world leaders.
The Cabinet reviewed a number of domestic issues, praising the establishment of the World Foundation of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz for Charitable and Humanitarian Works. The ministers also hailed King Abdullah’s project, inaugurated in the last ten days of Ramadan, to use modern technologies to preserve the purity of Zamzam water. The initiative, undertaken at the monarch’s own expense, is estimated to cost SR 700 million [$186.75 million]. Finally, the Cabinet listened to a summary of the 46th report of Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency (SAMA), which reviewed the economic developments in the Kingdom in 2009 and the first quarter of 2010.
On the international front, the ministers reviewed the outcomes of the 7th Meeting of the Interior Ministers of Iraq’s Neighboring Countries and the 134th session of Arab League Foreign Ministers. Regarding the opening of the 65th session of the United Nations General Assembly, the Cabinet stressed the importance of realizing the Millennium Development Goals, which aim to significantly reduce world poverty by 2015. The Kingdom, it was noted, has already managed to meet most of its Millennium Development targets well ahead of schedule.
Addressing its agenda items, the Cabinet approved the establishment of a non-governmental organization, named the “Saudi Society for Quality,” supervised by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry; approved a draft agreement on general cooperation with Zambia; authorized the Foreign Minister to sign a draft agreement on general cooperation with Djibouti; approved a memorandum of understanding on educational and scientific cooperation between the Saudi Ministry of Higher Education and the Argentine Ministry of Education; authorized the Minister of Finance to sign two draft agreements regarding the avoidance of double taxation and income tax evasion with Ethiopia and Japan; and authorized the Minister of Agriculture to sign a draft agreement on technical cooperation in the field of agriculture and fisheries between the Saudi Ministry of Agriculture and Filipino Ministry of Agriculture.
