Crown Prince chairs Cabinet session (5/20/13)

Crown Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz chaired the weekly Cabinet session in Jeddah this afternoon. The ministers began by reviewing a report on the most recent foreign contacts made by Saudi officials, as well as a summary of the latest regional and international developments. They expressed appreciation towards Chinese President Xi Jinping, who told visiting Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal of his desire to strengthen Saudi-Chinese communication and cooperation in order to contribute to regional peace and stability.

The Cabinet welcomed the approval by the United Nations General Assembly of an Arab resolution condemning the escalation of violence in Syria and the Assad regime’s continued perpetration of serious human rights violations against the Syrian people. Furthermore, it noted the statement issued following a meeting of the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Qatar, Turkey, the UAE and Egypt agreeing to discuss the current situation in Syria from a regional perspective.

On the domestic front, the Cabinet praised the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz for his approval of the recommendations of the Ministerial Committee on the subject of surrogate female teachers in public schools. It also congratulated the Saudi students representing the King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity for winning awards at the Intel International Science and Engineering Exhibition and the Ministry of Education for winning the World Summit Award on the Information Society for the year 2013.

Addressing its remaining agenda items, the Cabinet approved an agreement with Turkey on cooperation and mutual assistance in customs matters; approved the 2005 Protocol on the Agreement for the Suppression of Unlawful Acts against the Safety of Maritime Navigation and the 2005 Protocol for the Suppression of Unlawful Acts against the Safety of Fixed Platforms Located on the Continental Shelf; authorized the Minister of Commerce and Industry to sign a draft program of technical cooperation with the Chinese National Interest General Administration of Quality Supervision, Testing and Quarantine; decided that the national body of contact and coordination referred to in Article (8) of the Code of Conduct on the Suppression of Piracy and Armed Robbery, approved by Royal Decree No. (M / 19), shall be the Royal Saudi Naval Forces; and approved the appointment of Dr. Fahd Abu Homaid as the representative of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and Khalid Al-Rabiah as the representative of companies listed on the Saudi Stock Exchange on the Board of Directors of the Saudi Stock Exchange for a period of three years.
