King Abdullah chairs Cabinet session

The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz chaired the Cabinet session at Al-Yamamah Palace in Riyadh today. At the outset, the King briefed the Cabinet on talks he held with visiting Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, praising the depths of Saudi-Iraqi bilateral relations. He reiterated the Kingdom’s support for Iraq’s territorial integrity, independence and sovereignty. The King then described his other consultations with foreign officials last week, including meetings with Vietnamese President Nguyen Minh Triet and former U.S. President Bill Clinton; messages received from Bahraini King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa and Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah; and a telephone conversation with Egyptian President Mohammed Hosni Mubarak.

After listening to reports on regional and international developments, the Cabinet offered its condolences to the government and people of Poland following the death in a plane crash of Polish President Lech Kaczynski and a number of other Polish officials and citizens.

The ministers then reviewed the scientific, cultural, social and economic activities held during the past few days in the Kingdom, notably the 8th National Meeting for Intellectual Dialogue held in Najran from 23 to 25/04/1431 H. under the theme “Society and Health Services.” They also discussed the meeting of Saudi ambassadors and heads of missions abroad currently being held in Riyadh.

Turning to its agenda, the Cabinet approved a number of measures pertaining to the reorganization of the National Commission for the Implementation of the Kingdom’s Commitments to the Conventions on the Prohibition of Weapons of Mass Destruction; approved measures concerning the continued escalation of domestic barley prices; approved the establishment of diplomatic relations with Colombia at the level of Non-Resident Ambassador; approved licensing the “Al-Jazeera Takaful” joint stock company; and authorized the Minister of Health to sign a draft memorandum of understanding for cooperation in the health field with the Belgian Ministry of Health.

The Cabinet approved the appointments of Dr. Ibrahim Al-Butthi as Mayor Undersecretary for Services at the Riyadh Municipality (15th rank); Jamal Aqeel as Ambassador at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Abdulaziz Abu Haimed, Ahmed Al-Barak and Jamal Rafh as Minister Plenipotentiary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Saad Al-Saaidan as Deputy Director General of the Department for Executive Affairs at the Department of Zakat and Income Tax (14th rank); and Nasser Al-Thaiban as Tax Advisor at the Department of Zakat and Income Tax (14th rank).
