King Abdullah chairs Cabinet session

The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz began today’s Cabinet session in Riyadh with a briefing on the contacts he had last week with foreign leaders, including Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifah Al-Thani, Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Sabah, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Salih.

The Cabinet welcomed the awarding of the 2009 Barcelona Meeting Point’s prize to King Abdullah, in recognition of the extraordinary vision he demonstrated by spear-heading the establishment of the King Abdullah Economic City. The Barcelona Meeting Point is an international, professional real estate exhibition held annually in Spain. The Cabinet hailed the King’s ongoing support for higher education in the Kingdom.

Turning to the upcoming Hajj season, the Cabinet listened to a report on the preparations being made by various sectors to accommodate pilgrims, who have already begun arriving in the Kingdom. The ministers urged participants to avoid any behaviors that might disrupt the Hajj or undermine its security.

Addressing its agenda items, the Cabinet authorized the Minister of Interior to sign two draft cooperation agreements with Qatar, one in the field of civil defense and the other concerning anti-drug-trafficking efforts; approved the rules organizing the opening of honorary consulates and the appointment of honorary consuls in the Kingdom’s regions; approved a memorandum of understanding attached to a protocol with China for cooperation in the oil, gas and mineral sectors, signed in Riyadh on 15/2/1430 H; and authorized the president of the King Abdulaziz City for Sciences and Technology to discuss with the European Space Agency a draft agreement for peaceful cooperation in outer space.

The Cabinet then approved the appointments of Dr. Abdulaziz bin Salamah as Undersecretary of the Ministry for External Media at the Ministry of Culture and Information (15th rank); Dr. Salih Al-Namlah as Media Advisor at the Ministry of Culture and Information (15th rank); Rashid Al-Twaijri as Director General of Follow-Up at the Ministry of Interior (14th rank); Abdulaziz Al-Mowanas as Administrative Advisor at the Ministry of Interior (14th rank); and Dr. Solaiman Al’aidi as Media Advisor at the Ministry of Culture and Information (14th rank).
