October 16, 2013

An official at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today denied reports that the Custodian of the Two ‎Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz has invited Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to ‎perform Hajj this year.  The official said that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia does not extend ‎invitations to Islamic leaders to perform the Hajj.  Saudi Arabia annually receives a number of ‎leaders of Islamic countries who desire to perform Hajj based on their abilities. The Kingdom, ‎within the framework of its services to the pilgrims, provides all services which enable pilgrims to ‎carry out their religious observances in comfort and safety.

“Regarding reports that the Custodian ‎of the Two Holy Mosques has invited Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to perform Hajj this ‎year, the source said that the Hajj is one of the pillars of Islam and that the Kingdom of Saudi ‎Arabia does not extend official invitation to perform Hajj, which is a religious duty.  “The desire to perform Hajj is the decision of the individual leaders and officials of the Islamic World,” ‎the official said.‎
