King Abdullah chairs Cabinet session

The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz began the Cabinet meeting in Riyadh today with a briefing on his latest contacts with foreign leaders, including a telephone call from Bahraini King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa and meetings with Chinese State Councilor and Public Security Minister Meng Jianzhu and former Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi.

The Cabinet reviewed the recommendations on joint Arab action issued by the Extraordinary Arab Summit held in Sirte, Libya over the weekend. The ministers stressed that reform requires, first and foremost, activating Arab cooperation by enhancing the Arab League. The establishment of new organizations is not necessary, they agreed; rather, the existing institutions must be activated, strengthened and reformed. The Cabinet also welcomed the Second Afro-Arab Summit, held in Sirte following the Arab Summit, and expressed hope that cooperation between the Arab world and Africa will increase for the benefit of the entire region.

Turning to its weekly agenda, the Cabinet approved a number of measures pertaining to the prevention of vehicles with a capacity of less than 25 passengers from entering Makkah and the holy sites during Hajj season; authorized the Foreign Minister to sign a draft agreement on general cooperation with Mauritania; authorized the Minister of Finance to sign a draft agreement on the prevention of double taxation and tax evasion with Sri Lanka; and approved the restructuring of the Council of Cooperative Health Insurance for a period of three years, effective 16/10/1431H., under the chairmanship of the Minister of Health.

Then the Cabinet approved the appointments of Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Shuail as Director General of Educational Media at the Ministry of Education (14th rank); Dr. Ali Al-Ajlan as Secretary General of the Council of Call and Guidance at the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Endowments, Call and Guidance (14th rank); and Abdullah Al-Sulaiman as Director General of Jeddah Islamic Port Customs at the Customs Department (14th rank). In addition, the Cabinet reappointed Abdulaziz Al-Munajem, Munther Al-Harthy, Faisal bin Farouk Tamr and Fawaz Al-Gosaibi as members of the Board of Directors of the Food and Drug Authority and reappointed Dr. Abdullah Al-Othman and Dr. Mohammed Al-Haidari as members of the Board of Directors of the Food and Drug Authority for a period of three years, effective 17/10/1431H.
