Prince Saud addresses Friends of Syria meeting

September 27, 2013

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal delivered a speech before the ministerial meeting of the Group of Friends of Syrian People at the 68th United Nations General Assembly in New York yesterday. He expressed his deep frustration with the situation in Syria and the absence of effective international action to put an end to the tragedy.

“More than 140,000 Syrians killed by the hands of the Syrian regime through using missiles, bombers and aircraft were not enough to move the international community, but it waits until the use of poisonous gases internationally banned, which caused the deaths of more than 14,000 victims, mostly women and children, to accuse the regime by committing crimes against humanity,” he said. The Syrian regime has continued to disregard all red lines, Prince Saud stated, particularly with its use of chemical weapons.

In addition, the Saudi Foreign Minister emphasized the importance of increasing humanitarian aid for the Syrian people and welcomed the formation of the new transitional government of the Syrian National Coalition. “International hesitancy is an obstacle for achieving peace in Syria,” he said. “We have to support the coalition and the Free Syrian Army.”
