Kingdom deplores Israel’s “barbaric” assault on Gaza
July 23, 2014
Saudi Arabia’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Abdulwahab Sheikh, addressed a special session of the U.N. Human Rights Council, which was convened in Geneva today to discuss the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories. During his remarks, Ambassador Sheikh stated that the Kingdom condemns and deplores in the strongest terms the barbaric military campaign being carried out by the Israeli occupation army. The current assault, along with past crimes, violates the fundamental rights of Palestinian men, women and children to live freely without occupation, siege, or bloodshed, he said. Therefore, the Ambassador called for a meeting to be convened to take steps to ensure the application of the Fourth Geneva Convention in the occupied Palestinian territories, including Al-Quds [Jerusalem].
In addition, Ambassador Sheikh confirmed that the Saudi delegation supports efforts towards Palestinian national reconciliation and welcomes Egypt’s ceasefire initiative, which has received backing from the Arab League.
