New election rules grants women right to vote, run for office
July 21, 2014
The Council of Ministers, under the chairmanship of Crown Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz, approved new municipal council election regulations which allow women to vote and run as candidates in municipal council elections. The new regulations are in line with Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz’s announcement September 25, 2011 in which he granted women the right to vote and run in future municipal elections. The new regulations also grants national independent non-governmental and non-profit organizations the right to monitor elections to guarantee transparency and fairness.
