Minister of State for Foreign Affairs attends AL meeting in Cairo
June 5, 2013
Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Dr. Nizar bin Obaid Madani led the Kingdom’s delegation to an extraordinary session of the Arab League (AL) Council in Cairo today. The meeting, attended by several Arab foreign ministers, as well as AL Secretary General Dr. Nabil Al-Arabi, was convened to discuss the crisis in Syria.
During the session, the delegates condemned the continuing violence and the increasing foreign interference in Syrian territories. They decried the use of heavy weapons, including shells and bomber planes, against villages and densely populated areas, such as Al-Qasair. The Council welcomed the call for an international conference in Geneva with the aim of finding a political solution to the crisis. It detailed the Arab vision for Syria, which would include the preservation of the country’s territories, social composition and national institutions; the formation of an interim government tasked with drafting a permanent constitution; and, subsequently, a peaceful transition of power.
