Saudi Arabia calls on world community to shoulder responsibility in Syria
June 1, 2012
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia called on the world community today to shoulder its responsibilities towards the deteriorating human rights situation in Syria, reiterating its denunciation of the Houla massacre in which scores of innocents, including children, women and the elderly, were killed. Addressing the extraordinary meeting of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Saudi Ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva Dr. Abdulwahab Attar said Saudi Arabia has repeatedly stated its commitment to the territorial integrity of Syria. At the same time, it has stressed the importance of meeting the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people for reform and halting the violence and bloodshed. Unfortunately, said Dr. Attar, the Syrian authorities have turned a deaf ear, choosing instead to use violence that has resulted in the killing, torture and displacement of thousands of innocent people.
