Crown Prince chairs Cabinet session (5/26/14)

Crown Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz chaired the Cabinet session at Al-Salam Palace in Jeddah this afternoon. The Council began by thanking the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz for his approval of the executive working program aimed at implementing the King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Project for the Development of Public Education. The program will be funded at a cost of SR 80 billion [$21.33 billion] for the next five years.

After reviewing a number of reports on the latest regional and international developments, the Cabinet expressed appreciation for the achievements of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) on the 33rd anniversary of the organization’s founding. It praised the GCC for contributing to regional stability and supported King Abdullah’s call for the creation of a Gulf Union. The ministers also welcomed the decision to form a high-level joint committee, co-chaired by the foreign ministers of the Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates, to further enhance bilateral relations.

Turning to other international issues, the Cabinet called on all Libyans to cease violent actions and engage in meaningful dialogue for the good of their country. It denounced the bomb attacks that killed and injured scores of people in China’s western Chingyang state, reiterating the Kingdom’s stance against all forms of terrorism.

Regarding local events, the Cabinet lauded the Saudi Forum and Exhibition on Energy Efficiency 2014, organized by the Saudi Center for Energy Efficiency, which wrapped up last Thursday.

Finally, the Council expressed its sincere condolences to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz and his family on the death of Dr. Abdulaziz bin Abdullah Al-Khuwayter, who most recently held the position of Minister of State and Cabinet member.

Addressing its remaining agenda items, the Cabinet approved the organization of the Saudi Society for Tourist Accommodation Facilities, the Saudi Society for Tour Leaders, and the Saudi Society for Travel and Tourism; approved special stipulations on land transport safety between GCC countries; approved the final accounts of the Electricity and Co-Generation Regulatory Authority for fiscal year 1433/1434 H.; and authorized the General President of Meteorology and Protection of the Environment to sign a memorandum of understanding with the South Korean Meteorological Department for cooperation in the field of meteorology and another memorandum of understanding with the South Korean Ministry of Environment on cooperation in the fields of protection, development and preservation of the environment.
