King Abdullah briefs Cabinet

The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz chaired the Cabinet session at Al-Yamamah Palace in Riyadh today.


At the outset, the King recounted the summit he hosted in Riyadh last week with the leaders of Egypt, Syria and Kuwait to discuss Arab reconciliation and cooperation. He characterized the meeting as frank and constructive and expressed hope that it would encourage Arabs to surmount their divisions through dialogue. For its part, the Cabinet stressed the importance of the Palestinian reconciliation talks currently being facilitated by Egypt.

King Abdullah briefed the Cabinet on his consultations with other world leaders as well, including a telephone conversation with U.S. President Barack Obama and messages from U.K. Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Turning to economics, the King emphasized the strength of the Saudi economy and its ability to confront the global financial crisis, noting the Kingdom’s participation in the conference of G-20 finance ministers on Saturday. He offered assurances that investment programs and expenditures on development projects continue.

The Cabinet authorized the King Abdulaziz Foundation for Research and Archives to sign memoranda of understanding with the Gulf and Arab Peninsula Studies Center at Kuwait University and the National Archive of Portugal; authorized the Chairman of the Board of Investigation and General Persecution to sign a memorandum of understanding with the Office of Attorney General of Korea; approved the amendment of paragraph (3) of article (first) of the Arab Anti-Terrorism Agreement; implemented guidelines for computer use at government agencies; approved licensing the establishment of joint stock holding companies "Water and Electricity Holding Company" and "Saudi Solidarity Company"; and declared that the Board of Directors of the General Organization of Railways shall continue exercising its power for a period of one year as of 21/03/1430.

The Cabinet approved the appointment of Hasan Al-Hussein as Administrative Consultant at the Presidency of the National Guard; Abdulhadi Al-Wadi as Administrative Consultant at the Presidency of the National Guard; Abdulaziz Al-Saqer as Director General of the Minister’s Office at the Ministry of Interior; and Mohammed Al-Mutairi as Director General of Legal Affairs at the Ministry of Interior.
