Shura Council condemns Israeli blockade of Gaza

January 27, 2008

The Shura (Consultative) Council today condemned Israel’s blockade of Gaza and urged the Palestinians to unify.

The Shura Council noted that the blockade has resulted in a significant deterioration of the humanitarian, economic and security situation in Gaza as well as the breakdown of public facilities.

The Council called on the United Nations Security Council to condemn the blockade. It also appealed to the international community to act swiftly to end the oppressive siege and urged parliaments around the world to help the Palestinian people achieve their right.

Meanwhile, President of the Saudi Red Crescent Society Prince Faisal bin Abdullah warned that the situation in Gaza is on the verge of becoming a humanitarian disaster. The prince urged international Red Cross and Red Crescent organizations to coordinate their relief efforts and establish a mechanism for distributing aid to the Palestinians.
