GCC states to withdraw monitors from Syria

January 24, 2012

Following the lead of Saudi Arabia, the General Secretariat of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has decided to withdraw its monitors from the Arab League monitoring mission in Syria. In a statement issued today, the Secretariat explained that after careful monitoring of the events in Syria, it is clear that the Syrian government is not committed to the implementation of the Arab League resolution to which it previously agreed. Furthermore, the regime continues to kill innocent people. The Secretariat called upon the Arab world and the international community to increase pressure on the Syrian government to abide by its commitments and end the bloodshed.
