Cabinet calls for Iraqi unity, condemns ongoing violence

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz chaired the weekly Cabinet meeting at Al-Yamamah Palace in Riyadh today.

The King opened the meeting by briefing the Cabinet on his recent contacts and consultations with world leaders and their envoys, in particular the visit by Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi to Saudi Arabia and its positive impact on Saudi-Italian relations. Addressing the visit in turn, the Cabinet highlighted the Kingdom’s interest in an active European role in regional issues.

The Cabinet reviewed the April 18 meeting of the Arab League ministerial committee on the Arab Peace Initiative, and reiterated that the Initiative is the primary framework for Arab peace efforts in the region.

On other regional issues, the Cabinet expressed regret and sorrow over the escalating violence and killing in Iraq. The Cabinet also called on Iraqi leaders to unite. It noted that both the foreign presence in Iraq and regional interference are temporary, and that once they are gone Iraqis will blame their leaders for the events taking place in their country. The future for Iraqis lies in a unified Iraq that is committed to the Arab nation and its Islamic identity, the Cabinet affirmed.

Turning to domestic issues, the Cabinet reviewed the progress of development projects throughout the Kingdom.

The Cabinet issued a number of decisions today, including: amendments to the Military Personnel Service System; a draft protocol of cooperation with Turkey in the area of archives; a draft agreement on cooperation with Yemen on fisheries; approval of the Ministry of Water and Electricity’s membership in the Arab Water Council; and unified regulations for the internal auditing units of governmental and semi-governmental bodies.

Appointments approved today included Ahmed Al-Zuhair as Assistant Undersecretary for Educational Development at the Ministry of Education’s Boys’ Education Division; Abdullah Al-Rimaihi as Director-General for Administrative and Financial Affairs at the Ministry of Transport; and Adel Balkhair as Assistant Undersecretary for Umrah Affairs at the Ministry of Hajj.
