Governor of Makkah Province Prince Abdulmajeed bin Abdulaziz, 65, died today in the United States after a lengthy illness, the Royal Court announced in a statement.

Prince Abdulmajeed was a son of King Abdulaziz Al-Saud, the founder of the modern Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and a brother of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz. Prior to serving as Governor of Makkah, the prince held the governorships of Madinah and Tabuk.

A number of world leaders offered their condolences to King Abdullah, including King Hamad of Bahrain, Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir and Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh. The King has also received a steady stream of visitors offering their condolences at Al-Yamamah Palace in Riyadh.

Funeral prayers will be performed for the prince at Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque in Riyadh after afternoon prayers.
