GCC, EU foreign ministers meet in Riyadh

The foreign ministers of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the European Union met in Riyadh today.

In an address to the meeting, Minister of Foreign Affairs Prince Saud Al-Faisal stressed the deep ties between Europe and the Gulf countries. He noted the importance of an EU-GCC free trade agreement, and urged the concerned parties to finalize the agreement as soon as possible.

Turning to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Prince Saud reiterated the Arab commitment to a just and comprehensive peace in the region within the framework of the Arab Peace Initiative.

Prince Saud also expressed his concern with the deteriorating situation in Iraq and called for the crisis over Iran’s nuclear program to be resolved by peaceful means.

In a joint press conference afterwards, Prince Saud said that the meeting aimed to enhance joint cooperation between the GCC and EU in all areas. Talks focused on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, he said.
