Saudi authorities fine seven Makkah hotels for safety violations

The Makkah Civil Defense announced yesterday that it has fined seven hotels in the holy city for safety violations, the Arab News reported today. Last month, the Loulouat Al-Kheir Hotel in Makkah collapsed, killing 76 and injuring 62.

“We have evacuated the seven hotels located inside the central region of the city after they were found dangerous and we have cut their electricity connections,” said Col. Jameel Arbaeen, Makkah’s director of Civil Defense, as quoted in the Arab News.

A building owner in Misfala was fined SR 30,000 [$8,000] for an illegal and haphazard electrical connection, Arbaeen said, adding that Saudi Electricity Company would also be questioned regarding the matter.
