OIC issues statements on Lebanon, Palestine

The Secretary-General of the Jeddah-based Organization of the Islamic Conference, Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, today issued a statement appealing to the Lebanese leaders to exercise reason and self-restraint to prevent their country from sliding into an irreversible, tragic situation. He stressed that a solution should be based on mutual understanding and should be within the framework of internal legitimacy without external intervention. He also emphasized that the OIC is ready to help Lebanon calm the situation and move towards a desired solution.

Ihsanoglu issued a second statement calling on Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, Prime Minister Ismail Haniya and all Palestinian factions to continue the national dialogue that has gone a long way towards negotiating a basis for a national agreement. Palestinian unity and the formation of a national unity government will effectively contribute to alleviating the suffering of the Palestinian people and move the peace process forward.
