Kingdom denies secret talks with Israel

Saudi Arabia has denied reports in the Israeli and Qatari media that it held secret contacts with Israel about the recent aggression against Lebanon.

On September 22, the Israeli newspaper Yedi’ot Aharonot reported that Prime Minister Ehud Olmert met with a senior Saudi official, possibly a member of the Saudi royal family, for talks about the Israeli attacks on Lebanon.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said today the reports were fabricated and baseless, and only serve the interests of those propagating them.

“The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has been plainly and transparently playing its national role, and it does not practice certain policies publicly and others secretly,” the spokesman said.

He added that the Kingdom’s position on the Palestinian issue is outlined in the Arab Peace Initiative, which was approved by the Arab League in Beirut in 2002.
