King Abdullah Economic City to include international airport

Plans are underway to establish an international airport in Rabigh as part of the King Abdullah Economic City, the Arab News reported today.

The new airport is expected to serve both the economic city and nearby areas, Chairman of Emaar Economic City Company Muhammad Ali Alabbar told the Arab News. Emaar Properties is developing the King Abdullah Economic City.

The city is considered the single largest private sector investment in the Kingdom. It will include a new port, with a dedicated terminal that can accommodate up to 500,000 pilgrims on their way to Makkah. It will also offer an industrial park, a 3,500-unit residential and hotel complex, and educational facilities. Construction began on the mega project in December 2005.
