Deputy Prime Minister and Commander of the National Guard Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdulaziz today chaired the regular weekly meeting of the Council of Ministers, and briefed the Cabinet on talks held with Syria's President Bashar Al-Assad and Jordan's King Abdullah II on the latest international developments.
The Cabinet expressed welcome of the announcement made by the Syrian President concerning the withdrawal from Lebanon of his country’s troops; looks forward to the implementation of the mechanisms of that withdrawal that were announced at the conclusion of the meeting of the Syrian-Lebanese Higher Council; and anticipates a complete withdrawal in the near future of all Syrian troops remaining in Lebanon. The Cabinet called on the Lebanese people to overcome the crisis, preserve the unity and stability of Lebanon, maintain dialogue among the various political powers, and avoid any division.
The Cabinet then praised the final communiqué issued in Cairo by the foreign ministers of the League of Arab States after their 123rd session, which included resolutions on various issues of concern to the Arab world and the assertion that the Arab Peace Initiative will be activated and submitted to the international community.
Turning to items on its agenda, the Cabinet passed a number of resolutions, including approval for a new paragraph, carrying the number 14, to be inserted into Article (37) of the Telecommunications System in order to ensure greater protection and to curb infiltration into the Internet; authorization for the Minister of Labor or his deputy to re-activate, and amend Articles (6) and (9) of, the cooperation agreement in technical education and vocational training with the Federal Republic of Germany; and approval of the draft strategy for fighting desertification and alleviating the impact of drought.
