At a press conference in Riyadh today following the inauguration of the National Campaign for Awareness of Water Conservation, Minister of Water and Electricity Abdullah Al-Hussain commented on the devices that are being distributed to 3.5 million houses in the Kingdom to assist citizens and residents to rationalize their water usage. The campaign, he said, will continue for several years.

The sector that consumes the most water is agriculture, with almost 90 percent, followed by residential, industrial and service use. Studies have shown that about half of this water is either wasted or in excess of what is needed. Charges for water will be increased in order to give a strong message of the importance of conservation.
