Governor of Makkah Province Prince Abdulmajeed bin Abdulaziz announced yesterday approval of plans to construct a new highway to facilitate access from Jeddah to the Holy City of Makkah. The new road will run parallel to Umm Al-Qura Street, which currently links the Jeddah Expressway with the area of the Grand Mosque in the city of Makkah.

Prince Abdulmajeed, as Head of the Makkah Development Authority, also announced plans to establish in the central zone of the Holy City multi-storey car parks, public transport terminals, and pedestrian walkways. Plans are also under way, he said, to establish a joint stock company to develop the Jabal Omar area close to the Grand Mosque. He gave assurances that these, and other planned projects, would be implemented without affecting Makkah's hydro-geology and topography, especially the sources of zamzam water.
