Interior ministry issues statement on Qatari consulate incident

The Ministry of Interior issued a statement today reporting that a car had entered the premises in Jeddah of the consulate of the State of Qater yesterday during a luncheon hosted by the Qatari Consul-General. The driver parked the car in the guest parking area, and when accosted, asked to meet the Consul-General. Upon ascertaining that the man was not on the guest list, the guard on duty telephoned the Consulates' Security Command. The driver was taken into custody without incident. A machine gun was found in his car. Initial investigations show that the driver is a 38-year-old Saudi citizen by the name of Saud bin Daeef bin Bustan Al-Shammari, who has a history of imprisonment for drug offenses. An investigation is under way.
