Plans for new rail link proceeding

The Ministry of Communications has completed a study on the proposed construction of nearly 1,500 miles of rail, to be entirely financed by the private sector. The first phase of the project would be the 613 miles from Jeddah Islamic Port through Makkah to Riyadh, where it would join the existing network that goes to the Eastern Province. The second phase would begin at Al-Haditha on the Jordanian border in the north, in Al-Jouf Province, and pass through the provinces of Hail and Qassim, to link with the existing network at Riyadh, with a branch line to Jubail.
