A joint Saudi-Egyptian meeting was held in Cairo today to discuss new regulations for umrah [the minor pilgrimage] scheduled to be applied this year for pilgrims from Egypt. It was agreed that, effective June 19, 2000, umrah visas issued in Cairo will be valid for three months and grant residence in the Kingdom for one month. In addition, the requirement of having a chaperon is dropped for women 45 years of age or older. All umrah visas will be still be granted free of charge. Saudi consulates in Egypt expect to offer 100,000 umrah visas monthly.
