Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) has announced plans to expand ammonia production at one of
its affiliates, the 'Ibn Baitar' Company, which is jointly owned by SABIC and the Saudi Arabian Fertilizer
Company (SAFCO). Its first ammonia plant came on stream in 1987, and the expansion will increase its
capacity from 500,000 to 583,000 metric tons. A contract has been concluded with the Japanese Toyo
engineering group for the design and construction of the project, expected to be completed early in 2002.
