Saudi Ambassador to the United States of America Prince Bandar bin Sultan bin Abdul Aziz has confirmed reports that positive results have been reached in regard to the settlement of the Lockerbie case. He stated that there was genuine cooperation on the part of Libyan leader Muammar Ghaddafi, adding: "This development is viewed as a happy one for Libya, for Arab and African countries, and for all peace-loving nations". Prince Bandar praised the intensive efforts exerted in this regard by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd bin Abdul Aziz, by President of South Africa Nelson Mandela, and by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Prince Bandar said that full details are being submitted to the UN Secretary-General, who had endorsed the initiative by President Mandela and King Fahd. He referred to the statement by the South African government, which noted that Prince Bandar, in his capacity as special envoy of the Saudi leadership, together with a special envoy from South Africa, had held meetings with President Ghaddafi.
