New gas fields discovered

Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Ali Bin Ibrahim Al-Naimi today announced the discovery of two new gas fields in the Eastern Province. On November 29, 1999, the national oil company Saudi Aramco located a gas field at Niban, some fifty miles southeast of the Ghawar oil field, following three months of drilling at a depth of nearly 15,000 feet. In July, Aramco located another gas field at Shaden, forty miles southwest of Ghawar, at a depth of between 13,000 and 14,000 feet. Preliminary estimates are of four trillion cubic feet of gas, but further drilling is needed for final evaluation of the two fields, and to explore the possibility of the existence of further fields.
