In an opening address today to the two-day international academic conference on research

into interpretation of the Holy Qur'an at the Institute of Oriental and African Studies in

London, England, Professor Muhammad Abdul Halim expressed appreciation of the constructive

role played by Saudi Arabia in supporting Islamic Centers abroad. He said that the King

Fahd Chair of Islamic Studies that he holds at the Institute conducts a wide range of

activities, including, as from tomorrow, the first English-medium periodical focussing on

Qur'anic studies.

Meanwhile, it was reported today that the government of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques

King Fahd Bin Abdul Aziz has extended financial support to the Islamic Center in Washington

DC for its 1999 budget. This comes within the Kingdom's continuing support to Islamic

institutions all over the world to enable them to fulfil their sacred missions in the

service of Islam and Muslims everywhere.
