Discovery of new gas fields in Eastern Province

Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Ali Al-Naimi has announced the discovery by the national oil company Saudi Aramco of two new gas fields in the Eastern Province, namely Wedaihi and Shama'a.   Exploratory excavation at the Wadaihi field began on July 13, 1997, and its productive capacity is assessed at about 16.7 million cubic feet per day;  while that at the Shama'a field began on August 16, 1997, and on February 19, 1998, gas was produced at an average of about 6.8 million cubic feet per day.   These explorations come within the framework of an ongoing program undertaken by Saudi Aramco to increase the country's gas reserves.
