STC plans new telephone lines

Minister of Posts, Telephones and Telegraphs Dr. Ali Ibn Talal Al-Juhani, who is also Chairman of the newly-privatized Saudi Telecommunications Company (STC), has announced plans for the introduction of 760,000 new telephone lines during the coming three months and an additional 1.75 million lines by the end of 1999. This will raise to 4.1 million the total number of telephones operating in the Kingdom. In addition, a package of new services is being prepared, including satellite communication to start operating by the end of November, 1998. Expansion of the mobile telephone service is under way, so that by the end of October 1999, there will be 1.1 million mobile phone lines, an increase of 100 per cent over the current figure of 550,000.
