Customs duty on tobacco products increased

The Ministry of Finance and National Economy has implemented a 100 percent increase in customs duty on cigarettes and tobacco products in the Kingdom as from July 1, 1997.  This decision was made in compliance with the resolution adopted by the recent GCC summit in Doha on a recommendation made by the GCC Ministers of Finance and Ministers of Health.  Finance Minister Dr. Ibrahim Al-Assaf stated that a number of GCC states have implemented similar measures, and expressed the hope that this step, in line with international anti-smoking drives, would curb smoking which poses risks to health, to society and to the economy.
