The National Chemical Fertilizer Company (Ibn Al-Baytar, an affiliate of SABIC) is to be expanded to include an acid production facility which will go on-stream in 1999 with full operational capacity set for 2001. The output will include 887,000 metric tons a year of aluminum fluoride, which will be passed to smelters in the GCC region. Saudi Aramco will supply the raw materials, which include sulfur and phosphate rock. Sulfuric acid is a key ingredient in the production of phosphoric acid as well as compound fertilizers which are exported primarily to Asian markets.
